As violence in Syria continues, the European Council on Monday announced fresh sanctions against the Assad regime. The EU called on all states to stop supplying Damascus with weapons and fueling the  bloodshed.

According to a press release issued by the Council of the European Union, 28 people, deemed responsible for the violent repression of the civilian population, were added to those subject to a travel ban and an asset freeze. The council targeted another two entities with an asset freeze.

The council also prohibited transshipment of arms destined for Syria and banned imports of Syrian weapons. EU nationals and companies are banned from providing financial services to companies exporting arms to Syria or cooperating with companies in third countries that are involved with the Syrian military.

This is the 19th round of sanctions against the Syrian government. Calling on all states to stop delivering weapons to Damascus, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said “The EU warns against further militarisation of the conflict.”
